NSU AIHC accepting proposals for 2019 Symposium

(Tahlequah, Oklahoma) - Northeastern State Universitys American Indian Heritage Committee is accepting proposals for the 47th Annual Symposium on the American Indian to be held April 8-13, 2019, at NSU in Tahlequah. Proposals are being accepted for concurrent sessions related to the theme, Celebrating Indigenous Women.

Presentations should tell the stories of our past and present women leaders, from the most well-known and celebrated to those who are just beginning to be recognized. This will include those who have made significant contributions in the areas of law, literature, anthropology, history, art, language revitalization and others.

The conference committee will conduct a blind review of each proposal. The best proposals will articulate a clear objective and purpose as well as importance of the point of view to be expressed. Proposals need to show evidence of scholarly care, clear and effective argument and/or a basis in research. Participants are welcome to submit multiple proposals. Concurrent sessions will range from 50 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes in length.

Priority will be given to submissions received by Dec. 21, 2018

About the theme

The theme, Celebrating Indigenous Women, will honor both modern and legendary matriarchs, focusing on women who have contributed to the success and growth of Indigenous communities and families. While not all tribes are defined as matrilineal or matriarchal, the contributions of women is ever present in Indigenous families and communities. Indigenous women serve as guides, teachers, caregivers, strategists, counselors and cultural preservationists. Not only do they serve as leaders within their families, but also their communities, their tribes and their professions.
